Iconic Sydney Chinese Restaurant “MARIGOLD” Will Be Closing Its Doors

Damns, this really hurts. As someone who was born and raised in Sydney, I have had many fond memories of family gatherings, random yum cha catch ups and community events being held at the Marigold. With the COVID-19 pandemic raging over the last almost 2 years, many restaurants have been doing it hard, and some are at this juncture – where they are pushed to close.

But this isn’t the first scare/disappointment. If you remember, recently Golden Century was about to close down, but creditors at the end voted to keep it open. This doesn’t seem to be the case with Marigold, with the restaurant posting an announcement on their website stating that December 5, would be their final yum cha service. Here is their announcement:

Dearest customers and supporters. With a heavy heart, we announce the closing of Marigold Restaurant Yum cha on Sunday 5 December 2021 will be our last service.

The Covid-19 pandemic has changed the way we live, work and travel.  Sadly, it has also hit Marigold’s function business and weekday trading.  As there are plans to extend the Citymark Building, it is time to say goodbye. In the past 39 years, we have been very privileged to have served Sydneysiders and visitors from interstate and overseas, many of whom have become our friends.

The children and grandchildren of our customers have grown up with us and held their milestone celebrations in the restaurant.  We have also served corporations and community associations, witnessing their achievements. We express our heartfelt gratitude to our customers for your support, especially messages of encouragement received during the pandemic.

We also give a big thank you to our suppliers who have kept the restaurant operating smoothly.  Lastly, our sincere appreciation to all our staff over the years for your contributions, several of whom have been with the Marigold family for more than 30 years.

Thank you. We wish you all good health and happiness.

39 years of memories coming to a close. I am pretty saddened to be honest. What about you?
