This is pretty big news and is a win for Asian Australian representation in leadership positions. Senator Mehreen Faruqi who is in the Australian Senate for the Australian Greens has just been elected by her federal Green colleagues as the Deputy Leader for Australian Greens. Her life story is one which is shared by many Asian migrant families in Australia, where she and her husband arrived in Australia from Pakistan with a 1 year old son, possessing only a suitcase of items to their name.
Mehreen has also been a huge advocate on anti-racism, equality, climate change and diversity in Australian politics. Her voice is one which is important in Australian Parliament and we would like to congratulate her on being elected as the Australian Greens #2 and leading their party with Australian Greens leader Adam Bandt.
