“I’ve always oscillated between being too political and being a straight-up silly goose.”
Meet Nidhi Kalaiya—a Kenyan-Gujarati storyteller, podcast creator and unapologetic advocate for nuanced conversations. Born in Nairobi and uprooted to Australia at the turbulent age of 14, fluidity, bold moves, and a steadfast refusal to settle into societal expectations defines Nidhi’s journey.
Growing up in Kenya, her life was ‘chaotic, fun, and deeply communal,’ a blend of temples and churches that shaped her uniquely multifaceted worldview. This environment didn’t just teach her tolerance, but fostered her lifelong commitment to challenging prejudice, especially the anti-Blackness rhetoric pervasive within many South Asian communities.
Moving continents at fourteen was anything but smooth sailing. Nidhi reflects, ‘Truly the worst possible age to uproot your life, in case anyone’s wondering.’ Yet, through teenage tumult, she discovered the beauty in never fully belonging. ‘As I get older, I’ve become quite comfortable with never truly belonging anywhere. It’s quite freeing, actually,’ she shares.

This ongoing negotiation of identity eventually inspired her hit podcast, Not Your Token Hire, which she dubs, ‘THE podcast—the one I’ve been talking about for years.’ Born out of workplace frustrations, tokenism and relentless wage disparities, the podcast is a candid exploration of professional and personal identity, delivered through part-interview, part-musing format.
‘Buying the mic was easy,’ she admits, ‘but editing and hearing your own voice—that’s the real challenge.’ Despite these hurdles, the resonance with listeners has been rewarding and surprising. ‘Knowing how many people resonated with these stories makes up for all the awkwardness of hearing myself back,’ she says.
Nidhi’s conversational style is intentionally casual and unfiltered. ‘I imagined catching up with a friend at a café—imperfect, nuanced discussions, not rigid academic exchanges,’ she explains. This authenticity, infused with humour and sincerity, sets her podcast apart, providing a fresh perspective in a highly curated digital world.

“I’m a tad competitive,’ Nidhi confesses, always striving to improve by seeking feedback from her supportive community. Her approach to representation is similarly thoughtful, prioritising diverse experiences and perspectives over mere optics.
‘Representation isn’t just physical appearances. It’s bringing in different stories from across industries, breaking beyond the internet bubbles we often find ourselves in.’
Among the many conversations Nidhi hopes to amplify, she eagerly anticipates tackling the topic of whiteness and racial identity with white guests—conversations she believes are overdue. ‘Whiteness is a racial category too. Are white people having these conversations at the dinner table? I’d love to explore that openly.’
Nidhi describes 2025 as her ‘Year of The Snake,’ symbolising a time of shedding old skins and realigning her values. With ambitions for live podcast events combining food, art, poetry and music, Nidhi is set on creating real-life spaces for genuine connection. ‘Metrics are great, but authentic interaction is invaluable,’ she says, encapsulating the core spirit of her work.
If anything is certain about Nidhi Kalaiya, it’s that she embodies her own mantra: when life gives you lemons, start a podcast, find your community and never be anyone’s token hire.
SHE LEADS is a newly branded series which aims at uplifting and empowering Asian Australian women in business, creative and other different sectors.
