Indian Student Stabbed Multiple Times In Sydney

This is extremely upsetting, and one needs to question the reasons behind the stabbing attack. Was it racially motivated? I mean, we can’t determine that as yet as no motive for the attack has been released, so let’s wait for more details.

28 year old PhD student Shubham Garg was attacked and stabbed multiple times this month. He was rushed to the Royal North Shore Hospital for injuries sustained to his chest, face and abdomen. He was originally determined as critical, but after multiple surgeries he has been moved to the general ward.

Shubham’s younger brother Rohit was the only one in the family to have a passport so an emergency visa was organised for him to come to be at his brother’s side. The emergency visa was organised by Dr Yadu Singh, the Secretary for the Federation of Indian Association of NSW who wrote to The Australian High Commission in India who took immediate action.

Police have arrested a 27 year old for the attack, no more information has been released. The Indian Government expect Australia to take this case seriously and take action on it.

“Some of our officials met him [Mr Garg] in the hospital in Sydney. We extended our consular services. Australian authorities will give you more details on the investigation. Our expectation is that it’s seen seriously.” – Indian Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Arindam Bagchi (via SBS News).

What is interesting and disappointing is that there doesn’t seem to be much Australian mainstream media reporting on this. Of course SBS did, but where are the others? This has been major news in India, but not in Australia?
