Reactions To SBS Series “New Gold Mountain”

Have you all checked out SBS mini series “New Gold Mountain”? If so, what did you think of it? My initial thoughts ( I will have a longer piece on this later this week):

I enjoyed the riveting mystery of the storyline. The filming location and sets was just a tapestry of GoldRush history, and even though it is set in the mid 1800s, so many of the issues are still relevant today, such as the racism towards the Chinese, and how they were treated like trash and not deserving of any opportunities….. compare that to the present day, and you can make the parallels.

One of the most important things to highlight from the series, was how well the Asian characters were represented – Leung Wei Shing – played by Yoson An, was portrayed as a confident Chinese man, who I must say is easy on the eyes! Zhang Lei, played by Mabel Li, was an independent woman who knew what she wanted and knew how to get it. When have we seen main Asian actors in Australia get portrayed in this light?

For starters, here is my “FIRST” reaction – yes I have no shame….

Now, here are some reactions from others who have watched it:

Christine Lam: Proud to see Asian faces! – FACEBOOK COMMENT

Let us know your thoughts, and if you haven’t had the chance to watch it yet, please go to SBS On Demand where you can access it. For those like me who are living overseas, get a VPN, set it to Australia and you can get past the geo block of SBS On Demand!~
