All that can be said about this is – wow how awesome! Jian Fang Lay is a mother of 2, 48 years old, and is at her 6th Olympics playing table tennis for Australia. Ranked 156th in the world ( a lot of that has been impacted by the COVID pandemic), Lay has just had her best performance so far in the Tokyo 2020 games, by beating world number 35 – Poland’s Qian Li 4-2 in the women’s single draw on Monday.
Lay will now proceed to the third round in women’s single table tennis – no Australian has ever made it past the third round in table tennis Olympic history – so let’s cheer for Lay when she plays, and hope she can make Australian Olympic history!~
This is what Lay told Table Tennis Australia about her win over Qian Li
“The coach kept saying ‘more patience, more patience’,”
“It just feels amazing. She is a European champion, so I am so happy to have won.”
Seeing the energy and passion in Lay’s play, shows all of us that age is just a number, and don’t let any obstacle stop your dreams!~
We also featured Lay in our list of Asian Australians in the Oz Olympic team – check it out if you haven’t as yet!
