Jason Yat-sen Li has been announced as the Labor candidate who will be running in the NSW state seat of Strathfield in the upcoming by-election. A big name within the Labor Party but also in the world of Asian Australians, Li is a lawyer turned consultant and has been outspoken on issues around anti-Asian racism in Australia, issues around the fragile relationship between Australia and China as well as other social and human rights issues. He has also appeared on news programs on ABC etc talking about a host of different issues.

If his name sounds familiar, it definitely should, as he ran as the Labor candidate for the Federal seat of Bennelong back in 2013 ( which was a campaign I did work on back then), and was on the NSW Labor Senate ticket in 2019.

Here are a few things he said in an interview with The Daily Telegraph:

We need a government that works to ease the cost of living; invest in our local industries, businesses and workers; invest in the critical care infrastructure of our state such healthcare and schools; and that genuinely strives for a safe and health community, 

This is a community that reflects my family background and my upbringing. It is a community that works hard and appreciates the value of education and the importance of family.

We are going to have to campaign really hard. It will be a really robust fight that I’m gearing up for,

His primary opponent will be the Liberal candidate Bridget Sakr, who lost her daughter Veronique in the Oatlands car crash back in 2020.
