Korean Australian family from Brisbane faces deporatation

The news from this is sparse and it seems that only Courier Mail had written an article on this ( albeit behind a paywall) back in November last year, so we hope things have been resolved. There is also a change.org petition that went around about this.

Yoon Ki-young and his family have lived in Brisbane for the last 15 years and basically calls Australia home. Together with his wife and 3 month old son they immigrated to Australia back in 2011. Now with his son a teenager and a daughter who is Aussie born – Yoon, his wife and son are facing deportation.

They came to Australia on a sponsored visa by relatives who were already living in Australia – but due to their lawyer delaying their permanent residency application ( without any explanation as to why), the Yoon family faces deportation. Only their daughter who is Australian born is a citizen but she would have to leave the country if her family gets deported.

Despite the son being Korean born and not having legal status in Australia – he has basically spent his life in Australia and only knows Australia as his home, having arrived when he was 3 months old.

In the change.org petition, Yoon makes an impassioned statement to the Minister for Home Affairs Tony Burke:

“We have built our lives in Australia, and leaving now means saying goodbye to the place we have called home for the past 15 years. It also means saying goodbye to the friends, colleagues and community that we have loved and cherished”.

“We urgently urge the Minister for Immigration, Tony Burke, to consider our family’s situation with compassion and empathy. Only then can we continue to live together as one family in Australia”.

“This is our family’s last hope and opportunity. Our future is now at a critical crossroads”.

There doesn’t seem to be any 2026 updates on the Yoon family’s predicament, so if any of you reading this have some updates, please send it our way. Of course we will be looking out for this as well~
