Australian sushi? Is using this term to describe sushi rolls culturally inappropriate?

We would be interested to hear your thoughts on this. Is it appropriate to call any form of sushi and in this case Japanese sushi ( as that is the origins of sushi) in the shape of a roll Australian?

Well, Melbournian Alex Marks moved to Manhattan and thought to herself about why there is no affordable hand roll shaped sushi, so she started a sushi shop to do this called it Sushi Counter in the West Village. Since its opening it has made the rounds on social media and there has been cultural appropriation statements made about the store as it is known as Australian sushi.

The only issue with this is that it is just sushi hand rolled. It really shouldn’t be considered Australian sushi if it follows the traditional sushi ingredients. They should just settle with names like hand rolled sushi…

How did Marks respond to this? Well this is what she said to Grub Street in a recent interview:

“If you haven’t been there [Australia], I imagine it’s hard to know what it’s like,” Marks theorizes. “We’re so lucky to have so many influences from so many places.”

Anyways, what do you think? Calling hand rolled Australian sushi – is that cultural appropriation or not?
