Just over a week ago, Awkwafina – who plays “Katy” in Shang-Chi was interviewed by Network 10’s “The Project”. It is pretty hilarious watching Peter Helliar interview Awkwafina.

She started by talking about how her family is one who “roasts” each other after Hellier asked about whether her family approved of her career choice as a comedian.

And what did she say about playing “Katy” in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings?

“It’s a nod to Asian culture and what it means to be Asian. There’s a lot of beautiful things that work here. Its a movie I don’t think I have really seen before. “

When asked whether she ever imagined herself being in all the major Asian film blockbusters and seeing the representation, Awkwafina replied:

“Never, no, not in my wildest dreams. I don’t think you know. I feel so blessed of the opportunities and I just hope that at the end though, with all these movies, what we all have in common is they are going to give way to more because when I was growing up , I didn’t see a lot of Asian representation, but I feel like there will be Asian representation for the younger generations now.”

“I also think there was like a smaller like when you put your own culture on display in this huge way, like you know, taking your shoes off before you come in the house, things like that. Its like you feel seen in this weird way.”
