Melbournian Jessica Au has won the inaugural Giramondo, Fitzcarraldo and New Directions novel prize for her work Cold Enough for Snow. Au has won $12, 926 (AUD) and she was selected as the winner from 1,500 submissions world wide. What an awesome achievement!
Here is what Au ( who is the former deputy editor of Meanjin and is currently an associate editor at Aeon magazine) said about her award win, ( via Books + Publishing):
‘I’m a huge admirer of all three publishers—they have a rare sense of commitment to literature, which as a reader I find necessary and nourishing, as well as wonderful histories,’
‘I’m thrilled to be one of the many authors on their lists, and excited to be working with them over the coming year.’
Her novel Cold Enough for Snow is about daughter taking her mother on a holiday in Tokyo. They check out the sights, smells, tastes and sounds of the area and have conversations about it and on migration, memories and experiences, and it makes the reader question who is actually narrating the story and who is really on the journey.
