Regardless of your political views, to see a woman of Asian descent take leadership of a major political party is something extremely significant – and Elizabeth Lee has done just that. At the recent elections in the ACT, Lee was re-elected as the Liberal representative for the electorate of Kurrajong and also took leadership of the ACT Liberals as the opposition leader in the ACT Parliament. To add more great news to this, the Deputy Leader for the Opposition and working alongside Lee is Guilia Jones, representing the electorate of Murrumbidgee.
In late October of this year, when it was announced that Lee would take on the leadership, she told ABC News Canberra that:
“It gives me great pleasure that we are standing here, my deputy Giuila Jones and I, in an historic moment for the Canberra Liberals,”
“We know that we have prayed for so long for a bit of diversity in Australian politics, and I am very proud that I can play my role.”
